The Accountant's Subtotals

An accountant added columns of thousands of numbers.

He didn't add straight through. Every hundred numbers, he wrote a subtotal and drew a line.

When he found an error, he only had to check back to the last subtotal — not to the beginning. When interrupted, he could resume from the last line.

The subtotals slowed his adding slightly. They saved his sanity entirely.
