The Architect's Specification

An architect didn't tell builders verbally what to construct. Every detail was specified in writing first.

If the architect died, the building could be completed from the specifications. If builders made errors, the specifications showed what was correct. If the building took years, the specifications ensured consistency.

The document came before the construction. The construction followed the document.
