The Captain's Log

A ship's captain recorded every decision in a log before executing it.

"Turn north at the strait. Reduce sail at sunset."

If the captain was incapacitated, another officer could read the log and understand the voyage's intent. If the ship ran aground, the log showed what had been decided and when.

The log came before the action. The action could be understood from the log.
