The Coordinated Surrender

Three garrisons held different parts of a city. For surrender to succeed, all three had to surrender together — otherwise the enemy would simply attack the surrendering garrison.

A commander asked each garrison: "Will you surrender if the others do?"

Only when all three confirmed did the white flag rise.
