A scholar needed to reference a text that existed only in a library three days' travel away.

Each time he needed a passage, he made the journey.

Finally, he copied the chapters he referenced most often and kept them in his study.

"The copies aren't the original," purists said.

"The copies are here," he replied. And his work proceeded.
