A generous host kept his table open to all comers.

His pantry, stocked for winter, was empty by autumn. Guests had eaten everything.

Winter came. The host and his family went hungry.

The next year, he served fixed portions. Guests could come, but each received only so much.

Some guests complained. But there was food in spring.
