The Explorer's Caches

An explorer crossed an unmapped wilderness. Along the way, she buried caches of supplies and marked their locations on her map.

If she had to retreat, she didn't retreat to the beginning. She retreated to the nearest cache and tried again from there.

The caches cost time to prepare. They saved expeditions from total failure.
