The Impatient River

A river flowed into a lake through a narrow channel.

In spring, snowmelt swelled the river. The channel couldn't carry it all.

The river backed up. A marsh formed upstream. The marsh absorbed the excess, releasing it slowly.

A new governor found the marsh unsightly and drained it.

The next spring, the river overwhelmed the channel, flooded the valley, and destroyed three villages.
