A general sent a messenger with orders to a distant captain: "Advance at dawn."

The messenger delivered the order. But on the return journey, he was delayed.

The general, not seeing the messenger return, sent another with the same order.

The captain, receiving the order twice, thought it was two orders. He advanced twice as far as intended — into an ambush.
