The Monastery Gate

A monastery accepted all travelers seeking shelter.

One winter, a fever came with a traveler. It spread through the dormitory. Half the monks fell ill.

After that, the abbot made a new rule: any traveler with signs of sickness would be housed in a separate cottage, alone, for three days.

"This is uncharitable," some monks said.

"Charity that kills the charitable will not last long," the abbot replied.
