The Overdrawn Well

A village well was deep and generous.

In a dry summer, villagers drew water constantly.

By autumn, the well was dry. It had been drawn faster than underground streams could replenish it.

The next dry summer, the elders set limits. Each family could draw a fixed amount per day.

The well lasted the summer. It refilled by spring.
