The Overwhelmed Clerk

A clerk processed applications. He was thorough and accurate.

His manager, wanting faster results, hired five more clerks to prepare applications for him.

Now applications arrived faster than he could process them. They piled up. Errors increased. The backlog grew.

"Work faster," the manager said.

"Send fewer," the clerk replied. "Or hire more of me."
