A bridge had been repaired so many times that no engineer could certify its safety.

They could continue repairing. Instead, they built a new bridge alongside the old one.

When the new bridge was ready, traffic moved to it. The old bridge was demolished.

The new bridge was known. The old bridge was unknowable.
