The Replaced Blade

A sword's blade was damaged. The swordsmith could try to repair it — heating, hammering, reshaping.

Or he could forge a new blade entirely and attach it to the handle.

The new blade was perfect. The repaired blade would always carry the memory of its damage.

Sometimes replacement is cleaner than repair.
