The Sailor's Charted Position

A navigator marked his position on the chart each noon when he could take a sun sighting.

If clouds obscured the sky for days, if he became uncertain of his location, he knew where he had been at noon. He could calculate forward from there.

The daily marks were small effort. The alternative was being truly lost.
