The Ship's Provisions

A captain provisioned for a two-week voyage.

"Add a week's extra," his first mate suggested.

"The voyage is two weeks. I won't pay for provisions we won't eat."

The voyage took four weeks. Storms, becalmed days, a broken mast.

The crew survived by rationing. Barely.

The captain's next voyage was provisioned for five weeks. It took two. He didn't complain about the extra.
