A castle had guards who changed shifts at midnight exactly.

For a brief moment at each shift change, no one was watching the walls. Attackers learned this timing.

The captain introduced variation: shifts changed within a quarter-hour of midnight, but never exactly at midnight.

Attackers couldn't predict the gap. The walls were always watched.
