The Storm-Bent Trees

A sheltered valley grew tall, straight trees — never touched by strong wind.

When a great storm finally came over the mountains, every tree snapped.

A nearby hillside, exposed to constant wind, grew shorter, twisted trees.

When the great storm came, they bent. They didn't break.

The valley had protected its trees from small stresses and left them vulnerable to large ones.
