The Surgeon's Rule

A surgeon had a rule: if a patient's vital signs dropped below a certain point during an operation, she stopped immediately and stabilized before continuing.

"You lose time," a colleague argued. "Some of those cases could be pushed through."

"I've lost time," the surgeon agreed. "I've never lost a patient to pushing through."

The colleague continued his own way. His completion rate was higher. So was his mortality rate.
