An empire maintained trading posts across the continent, all managed from the capital. Orders flowed out; goods flowed in.

When the capital fell to invaders, every trading post received no orders. They waited. They failed.

A rival network of merchants had no capital. Each post traded independently, sharing information but not control.

When one post was destroyed, the others continued. They barely noticed.
