The Two Wells

A village had two wells. Both provided water.

One well had a depth marker and a log book. Each day, someone recorded the water level.

The other well had neither. Water came up when the bucket went down. That was enough.

A dry summer came. The first well's records showed the water table dropping for weeks. The village began rationing early.

The second well ran dry without warning. Its village had nothing stored.
