A mapmaker sent copies of his map to five cities.

Explorers in each city discovered errors and corrections. Each city's copy was updated locally.

Once a year, the mapmaker collected all corrections and produced a new master map.

During the year, maps disagreed. After reconciliation, they agreed again — until new discoveries began a new cycle.
