A bank opened at nine. On the first of each month, a crowd gathered before dawn.

When the doors opened, the surge overwhelmed the tellers. Service collapsed.

The bank hired doormen who admitted customers in small groups. The crowd waited outside in an orderly line.

Service was slower for the first customers but faster for everyone overall.
