The Counted Sheep

A shepherd counted his sheep each night by marking a tally.

One night, a sheep passed the gate twice — it had circled back.

The shepherd's count was off by one. He searched for a missing sheep that wasn't missing.

An older shepherd used a different method: he marked each sheep as it passed, not the passing itself. A sheep marked twice was still one sheep.
