The Festival Bridge

A town had a bridge adequate for daily traffic.

Once a year, a festival brought ten times the normal crowd.

Each festival, the bridge was impassable. Some years, people fell into the river.

Finally, they built a bridge sized for the festival.

"Empty most of the year," critics said.

"Standing all of the year," the builders replied.
