The Harvest Granary

A village built a granary sized for average harvests.

Most years, it held the grain with room to spare.

Then came a bumper year. The harvest was half again the average. The granary overflowed. Grain rotted in the rain.

The next granary was built larger. "Wasteful," some said in average years.

"Insurance," others replied when the next bumper year came.
