A canal had ten locks operated by a single mechanism — turn one wheel, and all locks opened in sequence. Elegant engineering.

One day, the mechanism jammed.

All ten locks froze. The canal was impassable for a month.

The neighboring canal had ten separate locks, each with its own wheel. Slower to operate, but when one lock jammed, the other nine still worked.
