The Travelers' Logbooks

Three messengers traveled separately, occasionally meeting to share news.

Each kept a logbook with entries for himself and estimates for the others. When two met, they compared entries and updated their estimates.

Later, disputes arose about which news came first. By comparing logbooks, they could determine: this news preceded that, or these two pieces arrived independently.

The logbooks tracked not just what happened, but what each messenger knew when.
